On Friday December 6th at Western Michigan University, McKenna Bowerman (L) Quincy High School and Madison Shuler (R) Coldwater High School placed first with their project "Light the Way" in the 2024 Innovation Expo The two young ladies designed a solar-powered fire hydrant pole attachment with LED lights which enhance visibility, allowing firefighters to swiftly locate hydrants. Its self-sustaining design eliminates reliance on external power, reducing maintenance needs. The LED's are activated by the Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) system which is on some emergency vehicles. The ladies presented their design to a panel of judges, one person who they talked with said they wish their idea was already out there because they had a friend whose house had burned down two days earlier because firefighters couldn't locate a fire hydrant.
This was the second year in a row that McKenna has taken first in the competition. The fire hydrant they used for their prototype was provided by the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities where McKenna is doing OJT. Both ladies are in the Engineering and CAD/CAM Program at BACC and are looking at continuing their study of engineering in college.
